Where did I go wrong.

Had a decent (mostly) weed free lawn last year. A few tight patches and holes here and there so I hired a lawn corer and gave it a good run, raked up the cores then top dressed with sand. Weeds and clover have now exploded all over the place. Did I release the devil with the corer or introduce it with the sand?

Keen to avoid a repeat of the same mistake.
