What to plant in front of hot window?

The lawn under my front (north facing) windows has died, I believe due to the sun reflecting off the tinted windows. Nothing has been successful in bringing it back to life. Would a small garden bed be more suitable in this space? If so, what sorts of low maintenance plants would survive?
