This is how I turned an old bamboo privacy wall into some edging for my flower beds.

Hey, this will be kinda long so if you dont want my rambling, just flick through the pictures and you will get the jist.

So I found some of these old privacy walls in my work and I brought them home for my garden, don’t worry I did pay, but I did get a staff discount. The wire holding it togeather was old and rusted but I thought if I tied it up well it would survive but I live in Shetland so our harsh winds took it down within a few months.

I hate to waste things so I decided I needed to repurpose the bamboo, and here is how I did it.

I cut all the lengths of bamboo in half.

I separated them into piles of thick and thin.

Cut the thicker stips in half again.

Tie both piles into groups of two.

Place three of the thicker bundles evenly spaced apart.

Start to weave the thinner strips until the structure is secure. For my design it’s usually three rows of thin stripes.

Now you need two bamboo steaks cut to length and put one on wither side of your weave.

Continue weaving your thin strips. For me I find 6 rows of 2 will do.

Tie the weave to the bamboo steaks at the top and bottom securely. I know my example is poor but I have a limited ammount of string and it’s not like I’m going to be moving them about constantly.

Straighten out everything and then trim off the excess to your liking, making sure the elastic bands are removed and the structure is secure.

And you are done. I know there is probably a whole load of better ways to do this but this is how I do it with the tools available to me.

I did soak the bamboo the first time I tried this to try and make it easier to do the weave but the bamboo is so old that soaking it for days did nothing.

Anyway, I hope you like this wee side project.
