Small tree/tall shrub for winter shade/summer sun (will a silver princess survive?)
I have a west-facing garden bed in Melbourne that gets 1-2 hours of sun in winter and sun most of the day (from late morning through til evening) in the summer. I’m looking to plant some tallish shrubs/small trees at the back of this bed, which is our back fence line.
So far I’ve chosen a callistemon & lemon scented tea tree but I need one more shrub or tree. I’m planting acacia in another spot in the yard and I’d prefer not to repeat.
I’d really love to plant a silver princess eucalyptus but I’m not sure how it will go with the winter shade? (It’s not “deep shade” I don’t think – mainly cast by neighbour’s hedging.)
These are my (flexible) requirements/preferences:
– At least 2m tall (preferably in the 3-5m range)
– Not super wide – say 1.5-3m (though width depends on the shape/density)
– Flowering
– Evergreen
I’ve mainly been looking at natives but I’m open to non-natives too – would love to get some recommendations from this helpful sub, thanks!
