QLD winter lawn care – should my grass be longer?

So I just serviced/scrubbed/re-bladed my mower, (as you can see) – on the picture does my grass look too short for the winter season?

Every year it dries out, the soil is sandy but very compact, by the middle of winter it’s usually pretty dry looking. We do have a sprinkler but water costs a fortune. Am I scalping the stuff too short?
