Plants for privacy North- facing

Hi everyone, I’m struggling to figure out what to plant against our fence. We want privacy so they need to grow at least 2.5m-3m tall. It’s North facing and light reflects off the colourbond fence. The pittosporums we tried to plant there have been fried. The garden bed is a narrow space (about 40cm wide) so we need something with non-invasive roots and not too bushy (like bottlebrush). Any ideas welcome. Located in southern Canberra. Clay soil but we’ve amended the top 40cm or so.
