Plant tomatoes quite close?

So I have been always told (well read from the internet, books, etc) to give tomatoes good space blah blah and last night on gardeners world, Monty said, plant tomatoes quite close together they will produce more fruits! Can anyone confirm please!? Is this a common knowledge? Many thanks!
