Maple tree is not healthy

My beautiful maple sits tight up against the fence in our backyard providing glorious shade during summer. It recently had some limbs that overhung the fence removed by our neighbour and has been stripped bare by a family of ringtail possums. This has happened in the past and the tree has bounced back ok. I’ve recently noticed this cracking on the bark and am worried that it might not recover this time. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
