I think I screwed up big time 😬

I don’t know much about gardening but a couple of years ago I was tidying things up outside my house and the lower part of this bush looked really dry, leafless and generally dead… so I started chopping 🫢With literally just secateurs… until the bottom of the bush was gone and my arms were scratched to ribbons. I thought it might fill back out over the years, but it hasn’t. Have I destroyed it? Does it look stupid? What would you do if this problemo was in your garden?
