How to use suet bird feeder and not attract rats?

Hi a while ago I bought a bird feeder that you put suet balls inside (I bought a bag of balls too). It hangs from a hook/branch and has a wire cage all around it and I think it has a small platform base but we are only talking an inch or so at most if so. (It’s dark and it’s outside somewhere).

I got worried when someone said “the trouble with bird feeders is if you don’t keep them tidy they attract rats”. I know there are rats around and I am terrified that they will climb up into my attic and chew the wires etc, due to previous bad experiences.

Does anyone have any advice? At the moment there is one of those metal hanging basket bracket things on the fence and I was thinking of putting it there (the trees have all just been massacred by the Tree Surgeon, so there isn’t anywhere else to hang it at the moment unless I get someone to put up a pole or a different bracket).
