How to get this native hibiscus back on track

We have this native hibiscus we planted some time ago and we love it and the copious amounts of massive flowers it produces, but its gotten so tall, and the winds here get quite strong, so over time its grown at an angle and it seems the weight of the tree is adding to the problem.

I just want to know if it will harm the plant to aggressively cut the main trunk to a more manageable height and then try regular pruning to encourage it to grow thicker and wider instead of higher. Any advice is appreciated, especially on when is a good/bad time and whether it needs any special treatment to prevent infection/rot/stress.

I’m able to find plenty of advice about non native hibiscus, and as I understand it they respond well to a heavy pruning, but I don’t want to just assume that this native variety will respond in the same way. I’d rather keep it as it is than accidentally killing it by hacking away recklessly.
