Help with Calathea

My wife bought this plant when it looked much healthier. We both don’t know a lot about plants but did research and placed it out of direct sunlight and water it more then we thought we needed to, approximately a few times a week, whenever the soil feels dry or the plant droops. It slowly started to shrivel and brown as we reached summer, there are some new offshoots starting, but not many. What are we doing wrong and how can we save it?
