Garden on a roll shady border – any tips on what to do next (wood barrier to be laid)?

This is a 2m long 90cm wide shady garden border. My garden has an East North East orientation and this is the sunniest spot (from mid Feb to I assume late November it gets the most sun; in December and January there was no sun at all).

I mixed in compost and soil under the paper. Mulch on top is only compost but I’m going to add some bark when the plants are better established (I was told it will deprive them of water when they need it most now).

I welcome any tips to improve and help these plants thrive! Thank you!
