Dichondra repens vs Viola hederacea for a sunny, north-facing backyard – help me decide please

I’m trying to choose between Dichondra repens and Viola hederacea as a ground cover for my backyard. It’s north-facing and gets a lot of midday to afternoon sun — this photo was taken around 1pm mid-May (Melbourne). There’ll be very little foot traffic. I’ll be putting stepping stones from the steps to the trees near the back fence, and I want to fill the gaps and the rest of the ground with a low-growing ground cover. I like the look of Viola more (love those bigger leaves) bonus edible flowers, but I’m worried it won’t spread enough to suppress weeds. I’ve only ever seen Viola growing in small clumps, never as a dense blanket. Is that just how it grows? Or can it become a proper carpet if conditions are right? I’m not in a hurry, I can wait a year or two for it to fill in. Most info online focuses on shade tolerance, but this area gets heaps of direct sun. Am I delusional? It feels like this is the sunny side of the house — you actually get full sun here, unlike the south side, which stays cold and only gets that weak, diffused light.

Is there something else i can mix in to cover any bold patches? I just know, i don’t want traditional lawn or gravel/ stones in there

Also, please ignore the neighbour’s yard — the fence is getting redone, so for now we’re all one big happy family with a shared backyard vibe. 😅

Any advice or experience would be really appreciated!
