Cutting back a cumquat tree in Brisbane

I would like to ask what the best time of year would be in Qld (Brisbane) to cut back a cumquat tree. It’s quite big next to a path I’m our yard, and we’d like to trim away some lower undergrowth. And would doing this trigger more fruiting next season?
