Best hand tool for removing turf?

I’m planning to replace my lawn with a garden bed of native groundcovers and would like to remove the grass.

Area seems too small to warrant a sod cutter so I’m thinking of cutting out sections using a hand tool. I tried with a normal spade but didn’t seem to really cut the soil at all. Any recommendations?

Bunnings sells a half moon edger. Or maybe a pick axe would be better?

Grass it kikuyu I think.
