Are storebought herbs somehow killed to prevent regrowth? – Reddit Post

I have no problem refurbishing plants usually. I’ve found wilted scraps of herb plants my chickens have eaten, and managed to get them to regrow roots and become new plants growing in pots.

A few times I’ve found herbs at the store that had been harvested with the roots intact, still looking nice and fresh. (mainly cilantro, parsley, and dill)

When I’ve bought them and tried to plant them, they just die within a few days. I’ve even tried putting the roots in a weak seaweed solution first to give them some nutrients. This is usually how I get wilted clippings to recover and root.

What’s going on here? Why won’t my fresh looking storebought herbs with intact roots ever recover and grow when a wilted clipping can? Do the stores do somethibf to them that kills them to prevent this?
