We dug up and moved an old apple tree and it somehow survived!
Last year we had to dig up an apple tree in our garden. I was really sad at the thought of killing something which had grown for so long (judging by the thickness of the trunk it must be quite old).
Everything online said that it would die if we tried to move it, that after about five years the roots would have been too widespread and that we’d probably kill it if we moved it.
We had to cut the tree down anyway so I just thought I might as well take a chance and put it somewhere else in the garden and if it died at least I tried. Our soil is quite sandy and loose and well draining so I think when we dug it up, it was easier to get more of the roots, even if we had to cut some of them.
Anyway this spring it’s been growing leaves and has blossom on it! I’m so glad that it seems to have survived
Ignore the weird support in the second picture, that picture was just to show you the thickness of the trunk
