Lush sculptural leaves NOT escapees!
I’m working with a relative with limited mobility to do some planting on an east facing slope of her property.
It’s a significantly large area (maybe 900 or so?) and has great soil, east facing, tall very established trees.
In the past she had a garden where plants like elephant ears and tree ferns thrived.
I think we’re aiming for a lush tropical vibe with pops of colour (from plants like bromeliads)
Here’s my quandary; I’m very opposed to planting in this area of plants that are typically garden escapees. There’s a creek that flows through the bottom of the property.
I appreciate it’s possible to restrain those plants but this is a garden designed for viewing from a deck above, some strolls on paths occasionally, and very minimal maintenance. She will be unable to keep them sufficiently supervised. I will do periodic maintenance but ideally that’s hard pruning and division & replanting every 2 or 10 years (folks, it’s not going to be “ideal” conditions!)
I am, however, happy to do a bunch of propagation, division, and replanting sporadically for a couple years as we will need to cost save.
So that rules out; Canna & calls lilies Elephant ears
I’m thinking; Philodendron Xanadu Native red back gingers Birds of paradise Cordylines Gymea lilies Tree ferns Elk horns
Can anyone see things on the list that have weed potential? On a broader scale than just in her yard.
And any suggestions of bright coloured flowers or foliage similar to a canna lily?
