Why is my grass dying in distinct spots?

So every year when the weather warms up, my grass dies in exactly the same areas/patterns. When it rains or is watered regularly, the (now) dead areas stay relatively green. Then as rain frequency increases, it grows back to the normal lush green over the autumn and winter.

I’d understand if it was the entire lawn area, but it’s always these specific areas with distinct shapes and borders. Any ideas what could be going on?
