Suggestion

I need some recommendations or suggestions 1. Is this tree dead? I thought it was and I was taking it out but it had some solid roots so left it but I’m confused ? Is it dead?

I was thinking of covering the front facade of my house with Boston ivy, I’ve seen it on different houses and really like the foliage and character it gives, what I’m confused about is should I plant it in pot and let it climb or should I put it in the soil
