New to gardening, found old tree roots next to slab, what to do?

As per title, took over house, clearing garden bed space, found what looks like dead tree leaves, kept digging, found lots of little roots up against the slab, do I need to remove them? Hopefully pic is clear enough. Any other tips appreciated. TIA.
