Am I wasting my time with this Callistemon?

Bought from Bunnings about a month ago, it deteriorated quickly. I think I underwatered it before repotting – it was pretty root bound.

I know it looks dead dead, but any time I take off a twig, it’s bright green inside.

It’s been in this larger pot for maybe two weeks now. Keeping the soil moist but not wet.

Obviously the dead leaves aren’t going to come back. My arborist relative told me to be patient but there are NO new signs of life and my neighbours are laughing, watching me intensely stare at this fried twig every day.
